Ep30: The Most Important Meal of the Day
· Written by Andrew · Sunday, 20 September 2009 19:00 ·
portal_boxartEpisode 30 clears up some ties by going to the phones to settle 2007 on the PC and 1989 for console. For 2007, Team Fortress 2 was already through, but tied were Supreme Commander and Portal. On the console in '89 there was a tie between River City Ransom and TMNT, while Mega Man 2 had already Cut. Both years brought some great callers who took some heat from the Platoon but stood their ground and argued passionately for their choice. Some debate over breakfast also occurs, with Curtis taking a strong stance against Fast Food Coffee.

The weirdest thing is I don't even drink coffee. I wonder if Tim Horton's brews their coffee in a microwave? :)

Kerry made some interesting points about the Christmas sales for TMNT. Teens, 20 somethings buy the majority of games now, but back in the day video games were mostly for kids and their parents bought them. Titles and reaction drove sales not quality.

No. River City Ransom straight up was a boring knock-off.

A knock-off of what exactly? What other brawler released at that time had...

1. Two player co-op mode that would let you interact with the other character to perform special moves

2. The ability to upgrade your 10 skills as you climbed in XP levels. (Punch, Kick, Throw, Weapon, Agility, Defense, Strength, Will Power, Stamina, Max Power)

3. The opportunity to purchase up to 6 new abilities which would let you perform special attacks such as Stone Hands, Dragon Feet, Acro Circus, Fatal Steps, Grand Slam, Javelin Man.

4. A world that could be traversed at your leisure, allowing you to return to previous screens.

5. 13 different sub-bosses each with their own personality. If defeated then returned to, they will show their cowardice towards you, as you have already pummeled them before.

6. 9 different gangs of characters that would occupy certain area's of the game. Each gang acted differently in the way they fought you, one gang would all carry weapons for example.

7. 8 various types of weapons that include Brass Knuckles, Chains, Crates, Lead Pipes, Rocks, Sticks, Tires, Trash Cans that could all be used as long as you wanted to use them. (They wouldn't disappear from your hands after passing through a screen)

Clearly there was no other game like this at the time...to say that RCR is just a "boring double dragon knock-off" or "what was so trailblazing about RCR" just shows people's inability to recognize a fantastic and original game.

I'm confused... wasn't TMNT good enough to cut the Project D crust?

It had nothing to do with being good, it had everything to do with being popular at the time and being extremely hard.
