Ep10: The Richmond Fair had a Tent
· Written by Andrew · Sunday, 03 May 2009 19:00 ·
pacman1980 is essentially the start of our list, and comes with one of the biggest video game characters of all time: Pacman. Before the Platoon chat about Pacman they rant a bit about the recently released Guinness Book of World Records list of Top 50 video games of all time. Kerry talks for a while about Space Invaders and Ben doesn't talk about Ultima.  This cast comes with lots of side banter about other games of the era, as well as lots of arcade cabinets, like Street Fighter II and Terminator 2. The cabinet conversation continues with discussions of Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell, famous from the King of King documentary. Jaime concludes with some info about Intellivision games like Astrosmash as well as the ever famous Smash TV. Next week there is some serious debate over whether the VTL Computron is even a game or if its a console, so let us know your thoughts, leave a comment or vote in the pole, then tune in next week to see what the Platoon decide.

I propose not to hold back until you get big sum of money to order all you need! You can just take the mortgage loans or college loan and feel yourself comfortable

I thought the music was perfect for that little announcement. "I hadn't hit puberty when I played LSL, does that mean I can't review it" - lol Then Jaime drops his signature line.."WTF are you talking about?"...lol

X-com did come out on the PS1, but nobody but myself really played the game..so mentioning this fact would have been pointless.

As far as I'm concerned, the stationary shields in Space Invaders were Sand Dunes.

Kerry argues that they aren't bases, but then by the end of his rant, he's calling them bases. Game Set Match. Just cause you poke your rifle out a gun hole in your castle doesnt make it an asteroid.

I did some digging around and found some additional information regarding this debate. Space Invaders was released in 1978 and developed by Tomohiro Nishikado. In designing the game Nishikado was inspired by Breakout, War of the Worlds and Star Wars.

Breakout - Explains the formation of the alien crafts.
Star Wars - Explains the space, sci-fi theme.
War of the Worlds - Explains the BUILDINGS at the bottom of the screen and how the alien crafts slowly move towards them.

Basically they were man-made buildings representing a city or whathaveyou. You being the laser cannon had to defend this city from the threat of alien crafts descending upon it, similar to War of the Worlds.

very cool, the backstory on these games is usually far mroe rich than the games were able to portray, so gameplay became kery, now story is so important, with graphics, gameplay isnt always fun :(

To steal a line from Jaime, "...I don't really understand that comment, but anyways..."

You lost me where you stated that, and I quote "...gameplay became kery..." - lol
