Ep09: It's Like Prince of Persia
· Written by Andrew · Sunday, 26 April 2009 20:00 ·
X-COM-UFO-DefenseEpisode Number Nine is ridiculous. Kerry first tries to talk about probably the best known FPS ever, DOOM, but is continually interrupted by side conversations. The conversation moves to Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold, where the Platoon discusses exactly what this game isn't, while Ben assures everyone that it is just like Prince of Persia. Some games for Mac are brought up by Andrew; Pathways into Darkness as well as the multiplatform Star Wars: X-Wing, but no one really listens to his rant. Ben then talks about IGN's Best PC Game Of All Time, X-COM: UFO Defense, but mostly just mentions IGN and not X-COM, although still manages to convince everyone how great a game it was. Of course this is not enough, so the Platoon makes another late night call. Check out the cast (subscribe to the feed or click the flash player below) and see how it went down.

Blackthorne certainly has that Contra-ish look to the animations where the characters seem to have "weight"

Official Question for Ben:
If someone was going to jump into the X-COM series, is it safe to assume that this is the best of the series? Were any of the sequels any good?

X-Com: Ufo and it's sequel X-Com: TFTD are identical in almost every
way, except that ufo takes place on land , and TFTD mainly under water.

I never liked the colour palate they used for TFTD ( too bright and
contrasty for gameplay that revolves around shadows and stealth ) , and
since TFTD is essentially a graphical "mod" for Ufo, I spent half my
time trying to figure out what TFTD weapon was equivalent to it's UFO
counterpart.

UFO would be the best place to start - the environments just got way too
big in TFTD to keep the experience fresh...but if you enjoy "bug
hunting" - searching every dark square for the last alien - then you
might prefer TFTD.

X-COM terror from the deep was totally awesome, better than the original in my opinion and much easier to get into right from the get go.

I think it just depends which one you played first. If you played too much UFO, TFTD might seem a little awkward.. and vise versa
