The Wingman
· Written by Kerry · Sunday, 25 October 2009 10:17 ·

logitechLogitech has been a producer of some fantastic peripherals throughout the years, for many different platforms.  A reputable company that has earned respect from gamers everywhere, they have continually improved upon their products.  Logitech began to develop mice for the PC in 1981, but it wasn't until 1997 that I bought my first product from them, the Wingman Extreme - Digital Edition.

The Logitech Wingman Extreme - Digital EditionNow there had been joysticks before this one, but none of them had a grand total of six buttons, a POV hat and a throttle.
The Standard Wingman Extreme came without the throttle and two buttons on the base, so the Digital Edition was an easy sell for me.
The flight stick also felt comfortable in your hand, with all buttons being easily reachable.  Flight sims were brought to life, and suddenly a whole new genre opened up in front of me.

I'd have to say my favorite experience with that joystick was playing X-Wing vs Tie-Fighter.  While flying in an X-Wing, it was extremely important to change your speed and direction as fast as you could while being engaged by a much more agile Tie-Fighter.
The ability to slide the throttle up or down with your left hand and changeX-Wing vs Tie-Fighter direction with your right all at the same time was crucial, and it all felt so tight and responsive.

The POV hat was also very important in tracking enemy fighters.  For those of you that might not have used a joystick before, a POV "hat" is basically a directional pad in the shape of a cone that generally sits near the top.  I typically mapped it to show me the left, right, above and behind views from the cockpit.

The Force 3D ProIf you're looking for a change from your daily routine, I highly recommend picking up a joystick and a flight/combat sim and giving it a try.
The latest Logitech flight stick named the Force 3D Pro features twelve programmable buttons, an eight-way POV hat, force feedback and an incredible twist control that allows you to turn on a dime all for the price of $89.99 CAD

You never know, a whole new genre might open up for you too.

Logitech has made some great stuff. I still use one of their gamepads to play some of arcade/sports games.
