Nostalgia Goggles: Actual Phenomenon? or Language Of The Idiot?

chaosRecently whenever I bring up topics like the X-com difficulty bug, Halo 1, or recount the story of that mammoth loach I snagged back in '98, there is always a percentage of people ( albeit small ) who go on flippantly telling me how the human brain is hard-wired to recollect experiences from the past as being rosier than they really where blah blah blah - basically, I must like classic games because my memory of them has changed favourably over time, just like a drunk guy's perception of "hot" may change as the night goes on.

The fact is however, the Halocaust deniers ( the people who thinks 2 & 3 were improvements) and the classic gaming cynics have it wrong - I'm not homesick or longing for something I lost, I have all my favourite games right here in duplicate! The reason I still like to play games from years ago is because some things simply don't spoil with age, for instance:

Wine
2001: A Space Odyssey
Honey
Jesus
Space Invaders
Wheels ( or circles )
ect.

It pisses me of when people scoff at games just because they are more than 3 years old, oh well, their loss *boots up Jagged Alliance*.

Vote up if you hate the Halocaust Deniers too.

Halo 1 is 9 years old. and 1 console generation old (maybe even 1.5). how does that not make it nostalgia?

i was playing goldeneye on my n64 and would go back to sonic 2 and jurasic park on genesis to "nostalgia." mr (or ms) dicklickin'lips, i dont think you know anything about video games. why dont you present a case for what is a nostalgia worthy game?

It's so true -- someday, I plan on writing a thorough, exhaustive, immaculate thesis, my magnum opus, as to why retro gaming remains relevant and how old games can still be enjoyable. There is so much to be said about the topic, especially, as you point out, when so many scoff at the idea without understanding what wonders are truly at work here.
