| PS3 Slim, Upgrade or Sidegrade? |

Sony announced their newest console this week. Wait, it's not new, it's just a rehashed PS3 with slightly different components. Why does every hardware manufacture subject us to this endless recycling and re-branding, trying to sell us every flavour of the same shit? Nintendo does it with their Gameboy's, Microsoft does it with the Xbox 360 and Sony already had 7 different PS3's before this Slim one. Do you the gamer get anything out of this upgrade? Read on for my take on the new PS3 slim.First off, the PS3 has always been a clunker. It looks more like a George Foreman Lean Mean Grilling Machine than it does a game console, so a slimmer version is certainly asthetically pleasing, and will fit much more nicely on your shelf. Also part of the asthetic changes are the finish, from glossy black to a new rough matte finish thats got a bit more grey in it, giving it a powder coated look. Neither of these features, as nice as they are to the eye, change your experience in any way. So what about under the hood? What have they done there to entice late comers to the market, or to grab a few more bucks from those hardcore kids that have to have everything? First off you'll notice what got bigger: 120GB harddrive with a rumoured 250GB model coming later, my guess is the Christmas rush, so probably released in November. Of course same as the fat PS3 (new official name btw) you can still swap your own HDD in there anyways. Next, what got smaller: the Cell Processor is down to 45nm. Then they just crammed the same 10 pounds of shit into a 5 pound box, making the final product slimmer by 33% and lighter by 36%. So I guess it's actually more like 3.5 pounds of shit now. Sweet. One big change in the negative is the lack of support for an alternate OS, like Linux. It can still do Blu-Ray and DVD's and CD's, it still can't play PS2 games and it still doesn't have any flash card readers (gone since the first iterations of the fat PS3). Its still got Bluetooth and doesn't have IR, but they've added Bravia Sync. It pretty much doesn't do anything amazingly new, its just the same machine in a new package, but it does manage to do all that while consuming 34% less power and operating more quietly than before as well. End result? Not a big deal. Everyone re-engineers and tweeks these days to try and jump sales and this is no different. I'm sure manufacturing costs came into play as well, but dropping the price was a nice touch. If you already own a PS3 than this is not for you, since you'll get the new 3.0 firmware upgrade anyways. If you've been holding out for some reason but really wanted one, now is probably a good time, its still one of the best Blu-Ray players out there and now its only $299. Oh, and it plays some games to I hear. |

As somebody who doesn't have a PS3, this new model has still not added anything that would make me want to buy one. I'll probably just get another PS2 whenever my current one dies.
