5 Most Insane Games for the TurboGrafx 16
· Written by Andrew · Thursday, 30 July 2009 05:00 ·
TG_16_logoWith Kerry's foray into the realm of difficult classics, I thought we should take a look at some of the doomsday type games on one of the lesser known classic consoles, The TurboGrafx-16. A console that came and went very quickly, it left behind an array of titles that in subsequent years have been volleyed for their craftsmanship and difficulty. OK, not really quality but some were fucking hard. Thanks to roms and emulators, a handful more souls have experienced these brutes, and the stories they tell of ferociousness and impossibility when trying to best these games is nothing short of heroic. Read on for the five bastard games you probably never played and most certainly never finished.

AERO BLASTER

aero_blaster
Developer
: Hudson Soft
Released: 1990
Genre: Side Scrolling Shooter
Players: 2

Why it kicked your ass
: Your entire screen filled with bullets, huge unrelenting enemies and levels with tunnels impossible to navigate. Even with loads of powerups or a second player, it was hard to learn and get better when you couldn't figure out which bullet/rocket/bomb had just killed you as you died and slowly drifted off frame.

DEEP BLUE

deep_blue
Developer
: Pack-In-Video
Released: 1989
Genre: Side Scrolling Shooter
Players: 1

Why it kicked your ass
: Sure, you could take a few bumps before death, but you were so painfully slow it was simply impossible to dodge projectiles or incoming baddies. It was like swimming in quicksand and you could only ever use one weapon. Very quick deaths. Again and again.

D&D: ORDER OF THE GRIFFON

orderofthegriffon
Developer
: Westwood Associates
Released: 1992
Genre: RPG
Players: 1

Why it kicked your ass
: Survival in battle is at best a crap shoot. There's little or no info on how characters are affected by their traits and that gives you no inkling as to who can fight what with any level of success. You die a shitload trying to learn this, then you keep dying some more.

LEGENDARY AXE

legendaryAxe
Developer
: Victor Interactive
Released: 1989
Genre: Platform
Players: 1

Why it kicked your ass
: Typical slasher, axing your way through the levels was fine enough, but with muddy controls you could never seem to get out of a confrontation with multiple baddies without one of them getting some serious knocks in. Little shits were impossible to dispatch and they would frustratingly gang up on you until you were done.

MILITARY MADNESS

military_madness
Developer
: Hudson Soft
Released: 1989
Genre: Turn Based Strategy
Players: 2

Why it kicked your ass
: You're on the moon, getting your ass kicked. Gameplay was simple enough, but getting good strategies down was not, especially when the AI never made a mistake, pounding you into a moon dust pulp. They were smarter and had better weapons/machines too.

Military Madness doesn't belong on this list. If you know about terrain advantages and have support nearby you can school the AI and have them fall into traps.

If you want an impossible game here, how about Sherlock Holmes for the CD system. That game was impossible because it was to retarded to play.

If you want to include PC Engine games, Image Fight I and II both will leave you a mess due to the insane difficulty.
